I grew up in the agency business. I did new business development for my firm and our messaging was … “we don’t want to be your AOR” (Agency of Record). That caught the attention of many. We were a boutique firm – smart, enthusiastic, nimble and certainly more economical than an AOR. We wanted to be considered for back burner projects. We had great strength in retail (yes, we worked with major national chains), fashion (major fashion manufacturers) and healthcare (hospitals and skilled nursing centers).

 

A mid-sized independent agency who knew me – asked if I would be interested in joining their firm to do biz development. I declined but offered to do 10 hours a week developing their business. Nine years later – I determined I enjoyed developing business for others. I primarily work with brand, marcom and PR firms, but have done my fair share for non-agency entities.

 

I love the cold-call challenge and the thrill of bringing in a prospect. And let’s face it; I no longer have deadlines – only those I put on myself. Greater balance in my life which is much appreciated.
